The German newspaper “Stiftung Warentest” has researched in its December issue, which OTC (‘over-the-counter’) medicaments di really help. They researched a total of 300 medicaments.
The advertisements feature prominetly medicines, which shall help against several common problems at once. Regarding to “Stiftung Warentest” this can not be recommened. They endorse single preparations, especially the active substances Acetylsalicylate, Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.
Nasalsprays with saline solution or Xylometazolin are helpful against the common-cold. Against cough they recommend Neotussan or a medicine from Ratiopharm. Against a sore throat pain one can take lozenges with the active substances Ambroxol or Lidocain.
Still most important is hygiene. Despite common knowledge most cold are not spread by “sneezing”, but by smear infection especially with the hands.
The immune system can be trained by sport, hot and cold showers, healthy nutrition and no smoking and an moderate consume of alcohol.
Interesting is to know that all colds are caused by virii. Up to now there is no real remedy, as for example colds are caused by human rhinoviruses, which consist of 117 serotypes, so that is is not possible to develop an effective vaccine against them. An vaccination is only possible against the influenza und this is only recommend for persons especially vulnerable, like children, old people or employees in the health care sector.
